In 2011, Global Communications Managing Consultant John Bailey developed the first “best practice” guidelines for crisis communications for the 53 member associations of UEFA, governing body of European Football.
This was followed by a two-day workshop on crisis communications & crisis management for the communication heads of the UEFA members and key partners in Prague, which included the communication director of the French Football Federation and the director of Stade de France. One of the scenarios discussed during the workshop was a potential terrorist attack on a major international football match. This scenario materialised in November 2015, during a match between France and Germany at the Stade de France in Paris, as it was being watched live by a global TV audience.
John Bailey was also invited to be a guest lecturer on Crisis Management for participants on the first master’s degree in European sports management (MESGO), supported by five sports federations & five European universities and held in Barcelona in June 2011 & June 2013. He has also contributed to an UEFA online training programme in crisis management for the European Football Associations
